Tokenisation is approaching a tipping point, and the implications for banks and asset managers are profound. At the Frankfurt School Blockchain Center (FSBC) Forum, FinPlanet and Cashlink jointly hosted an interactive workshop on “Tokenisation Tipping Point: Evidence, Strategy and Implications for Banks and Asset Managers”. It was led by Dr. Dirk Sturz (FinPlanet) and Simon Censkowsky (Cashlink).

The workshop was the third of its kind and brought together experts from across the financial industry.

Key results

  1. New distribution channels and cost savings drive adoption. Participants saw these as the main drivers, especially for structured products.
  2. DLT know-how is still the bottleneck. Building DLT-specific knowledge within traditional banks remains one of the biggest challenges.
  3. Infrastructure has matured, but remains fragmented. Maturity has improved significantly, but solutions are still heterogeneous and interoperability is lagging.

The breakthrough appears imminent

41% of participants expect that more than 20% of capital markets will be tokenised within the next three to five years.

Our view

Tokenisation is not just a technological shift but a strategic inflection point. Those who move early will shape the next era of financial infrastructure. The results match what we see in our projects: the technology is ready, and the bottleneck is increasingly strategy, operating model and skills. Our study on DLT cost savings shows how large the efficiency potential in the middle and back office is.

Many thanks to Cashlink and to all participants for an open and insightful exchange.
